There are many different ways in which to analyze the marketplace at this juncture of time, the least of which is the constant distraction we all get from the worst environmental catastrophe in our nation’s and possibly the world’s history – though I would suggest that Chernobyl was greater.

How do we react? How do we stay focused on our own lives and business? How do we not go crazy at the sight of the endless stream of oil spilling into the sea and our helpless position to do anything about it?

It is very simple really – sell.

Now how will that help you may ask? Well, my experience has always shown me that the best way to sell your customers is to engage with them, in person or on the phone – but always person to person. One of the completely unanticipated side benefits of reaching out and seeing how you can help someone with their business challenges is to help them focus on something they can get an immediate feeling of satisfaction from. You both will feel better – even if their is no immediate purchase. Just the discussion alone will lift our spirits.

So – as we move through the summer solstice and the days begin to shorten – remember – when you don’t know what you want or need to do – pick up the phone and talk to your customers – it’s amazing how much better we all will feel.

And if you want to see what we are up to – please visit our site, there are many new additions to our case studies as we spread our wings and grow.

Thanks.

Minicom Digital Signage Reveals Remote Device Management (RDM) Technology for … ⸗ http://goo.gl/fb/29hcS

Remote centralized management and Proof of Performance reduce operational costs and TCO

Minicom Digital Signage (MDS), the leader in media infrastructure solutions for the Digital Signage (DS) marketplace, will demonstrate the first Remote Device Management (RDM) solution with Proof of Performance capabilities at Screen Media Expo 2010 (booth D5). The show will be taking place in London (UK), on May 5-6, 2010.

The proprietary RDM technology enables reliable remote monitoring and control of display assets of any DS and DooH network, and marks the conceptualization of managed displays. The solution features a unique Media Feedback Mechanism (MFM) for Proof of Performance (POP) so advertisers in DooH networks can validate and audit advertising to ensure both the quantity and quality of the broadcasted ad.

With the management capabilities offered by the RDM, operators can reduce system downtime and improve visibility while reducing operational costs and increasing return on investment. The technology enables automatic triggering of support call when necessary, so network operators can intervene quickly and efficiently to reduce operational expenses and thereby total cost of ownership.

Ronni Guggenheim, CEO Minicom Digital Signage: “The world of Digital Signage is expanding rapidly with millions of displays from different vendors deployed globally. The interest of media operators is to extract the maximum value from their business-critical media infrastructure, 24/7. This creates a natural trend towards remote central management of media-space display assets, which will be a crucial capability. Our RDM technology provides an essential building block helping the market mature.”

Minicom Digital Signage RDM technology provides:

· Easier management with consistent monitoring and control of all display assets

· Increased reliability with actual media sampling

· Increased robustness with objective means of monitoring and control

Investment enables market leading digital signage solutions provider to broaden its platform and expand its services to meet market requirements.

Published: March 24th, 2010

Untitled-1 Minicom Advanced Systems, a developer of remote access, KVM, and digital signage solutions, today announced that it would spinout its digital signage division (“MDS”). The new company simultaneously announced that it had raised $6 million to finance its operations independently. The investment, which was led by Jerusalem Venture Partners and joined by Aviv Ventures, will enable the company to broaden its platform from its new offices in Jerusalem’s JVP Media Quarter.

MDS is a leading vendor of media distribution solutions for the Digital Signage and Digital out of Home (DooH) marketplace. According to MDS’ CEO, Ronni Guggenheim, “This investment is the natural next step in MDS’ lifecycle. The support of our investors positions us to explore inorganic growth options and to drive the acceleration of our product roadmap towards the establishment of MDS as a full scale enabling platform in the digital signage market.”

MDS’ technology is currently deployed on over 400,000 screens worldwide, and facilitates the distribution of content to consumers in retail, education, finance, transportation, and hospitality environments. In addition to the company’s headquarters in Israel, MDS has offices in the UK, Switzerland, and the US in order to meet the localized needs of its customers.

Gadi Tirosh, General Partner at JVP, explains that “MDS, with its seasoned leadership, global footprint, and strong operating history from within Minicom, is poised to build a broader platform in this growing but still fragmented market.” JVP typically invests in businesses that apply technology acumen towards the development of new media models, and with its investment in MDS, now enters another segment of traditional media that is on the verge of digitization.

Do use audio when needed!

Posted by minicom On December - 30 - 2009

Most of the time the best thing to do with your content for digital signage is to broadcast it without audio. People can’t hear it very well and for shop employees it really is annoying. They will switch the audio off going mad hearing the same melody every 5 minutes. But sometimes we do recommend to use audio. Just use it for the clips that need extra attention. No audio for mood etc but use audio for commercials, for example. Just to wake people up passing the screen.

A good example, I think, where they would have done a good job is using audio for the giant screen at Victoria Railway station, London. It is a giant hall with a giant screen and I tried to have a look at the people in the hall. And guess what, nearly nobody was looking at the screen. Expensive commercials came along. Nobody noticed them, as far as I could see. Think it is a good idea to pause the programming with some really cool content and then show the commercials (with audio).

Watch a little clip of the screen and also look at the clip below where you can see no one was watching. It is a pity for such a great location.

Piccadilly circus, talking about impact!

Posted by minicom On December - 22 - 2009

Just a short posting this week. Visited London last Wedsnesday, actually rather cold because of the wet snow slamming into my face horizontally. But somehow it always happens when I am in this city, I must see Piccadilly circus. I always want to experience the mother of all out of home (digital) signage; the giant screens. This time I made a little clip of it just to share it with you.

Beneath it I found a banking office. Just before security asked me to stop filming with my HTC I shot this little clip. That’a a nice way of using content!

And this guy, don’t know how he felt that day. Also rather cold I presume.

What we can learn from traditional signage.

Posted by minicom On December - 16 - 2009

We all think and know we are doing a good job in our industry. We all think we know how to fill those screens in the most proper and revenue gaining way. But sometimes we cope with the difficulty of telling the message unless we all know less is more. Therefore I want to give you all a good tip; if you can’t find the right solution for you instore tv add, just think about it as if you produce an add for a digital signage screen. Because there you have to follow the golden rule less is more.

Beneath a couple of brilliant examples of traditional, non digital, signage to make something clear to the audience. Examples of professional agencies but also of non-professionals. Again, it is all about creativity.

The white line says: ‘Durex wishes you a great evening.’

Digital Signage and Zurich clubbing scene – Moods Example

Posted by minicom On December - 10 - 2009

moods1

The latest noted trend on the Zurich clubbing scene is introduction of new media into the customizable, usually limited club space.

moods4

If we take Moods, the first address for jazz events in Zurich, as one of the examples for the trend, we can notice that the new well placed displays, just between the bar and adaptable podium and stage are gaining huge attention of the audience. They are running the ads of sponsors and information about the program of the night or announcement for the future planned events.

moods2moods5

But, two new displays in this avant-garde place is not the only novelty. Projector with the screen is being placed right on the stage, which allows the organizer to switch from e.g. displaying movies to full music stage within couple minutes (see two pictures above).

moods3

It is really good to see how the club owners respond to the latest trends, and the way their business feeling leads them to give their clubs this up-to-date look and feel with digital signage (pictures origin: Goran Potkonjak).

It is an often heard phenomenon these days to integrate UGC into the content programming of DS screens. I know, technical aspects aren’t an obstacle anymore. And I also know, some target groups are more than ready for it. But it still makes me shiver to open your bandwidth for everyone who wants to upload their own mobile-phone-shot-clips or pictures. What about viruses, what about abusive content and how to control it, and most important what about your advertisers who bought expensive airtime during the same loop of content? Do they like to be exposed to possible abusive content next to theirs?

I know, there are more possibilities. Let people edit their own clips or impressions at home on their own laptop. After an editor censored it the content always can be broadcasted in a safe way. But this is expensive and a time raising effort.

But what are the benefits of UGC? During a concert, a soccer game or on a large screens as just have been placed in London UGC may work. It even might be fun. But, always involve your advertisers if you decide to do it.
In my opinion UGC gives you, as a network owner, more headache than profit. I am not convinced at all. And please let’s be careful. At last companies are learning and accepting to book more money for content. So why should we take a risk to integrate UGC if the benefits are not clear at the moment. Perhaps I am wrong. Would be nice if someone could convince me…

Okay, one last note; I wrote about it before, lately a UGC concept was given birth at bus.top. Think this kind of UGC could make sense. But then again, I hope they can control the guys who wants to upload abusive content.

FIFA, Cape Town and Digital Signage – All-in-one

Posted by minicom On December - 5 - 2009

fifa draw_7

Yes, we are talking about the draw for football World Cup, that will for the first time take place on the African continent. The ceremony was held yesterday, in Cape Town, and we were once again impressed by the way that FIFA uses contemporary technology at their high-profile events.

fifa draw_6

This time, on the 4.600 square meters stage, they managed to install huge screens, which showed live the draw results, run different content (artist videos, Nelson Mandela’s speech etc)

fifa draw_8  fifa draw_2 fifa draw_5

It wasn’t only the stage that was digitilized for the occasion. The hall was as well…

fifa draw_4

…just like a space in front of the Cape Town congress centre, where all the fans without VIP tickets had a chance to take a look of the draw festival live (the pictures are taken from fifa.com).
